On October 28, Google announced that the Meet Media API’s endpoints will shut down on January 15, 2027. This is a future shutdown date, not a claim that the service has already stopped working.
Who should check
Business owners whose contractors or internal teams use the experimental Media API for meeting automation. Calling a product a “Meet assistant” does not establish that it uses this API.
According to the product page, new signups are already closed and the program will not reach general availability. Existing participants retain access until shutdown. The Meet REST API and Meet Add-ons SDK are unaffected.
What to ask the person responsible
Our editorial checking sequence:
- Get the exact API name used by the integration, not just the app’s name.
- If it uses the Media API, request a list of dependent business workflows and a transition plan before January 15.
- Define the outcome that must remain available: for example, a draft summary after a customer call. This is an illustrative scenario, not our test.
- Agree on checks of the new workflow and a manual fallback before the old service shuts down.
An alternative is not a promise of full replacement
Google recommends the Meet REST API for workflows such as post-meeting summaries. Its documentation describes retrieving recordings, transcripts and smart notes. That does not establish that every existing Media API workflow can move unchanged: the person responsible must compare required capabilities and access.
The takeaway: do not rebuild ordinary calls because of the headline alone. First establish whether a Media API dependency exists, then approve a migration.
