ChatGPT adds mobile account switching: check which account is active

Account switching is rolling out on iOS and Android. Before sending a work document, check the active account, especially after opening a notification.

On October 30, 2026, OpenAI announced the gradual rollout of account switching in ChatGPT for iOS and Android. You can stay signed in to two accounts and move between them without signing out; their conversations, memory, settings and subscriptions remain separate.

Who it helps

Small-business owners and employees who use personal and work-approved accounts on their phones. Nadali’s practical takeaway: easier switching does not replace checking where you are sending a work document.

Check the active account first

According to OpenAI’s guide, only one account is active. Opening a notification for the other account switches the app to it. On mobile, add an account through Settings → Switch account → Add account; if the switching option is missing, the feature may not yet be available.

Our proposed team routine:

  1. Check the active account before a work request, including after opening a notification.
  2. Perform your first check with a fictional document containing no customer data.
  3. Agree which account is approved for each work process. Do not move documents to a personal account simply because it is open.
  4. If a colleague cannot see the feature, do not make its availability a requirement for the team’s workflow.

Limits and takeaway

Switching accounts is not switching workspaces within an account. Subscriptions do not transfer between accounts. This concerns a mobile rollout, not a new launch on the web or a guarantee against sending data to the wrong place.
