On October 28, 2026, Shopify announced that Sidekick can use web search to add market and industry context to store recommendations. According to the company, the assistant combines store context with public information from the web and suggests actions on the admin home page—when recommendations are available for that store.
In brief: this adds a source of context for suggestions, not permission for AI to change a business autonomously. For a small online-store owner, the practical value is the opportunity to consider suggestions informed by external information as well as store data. The announcement does not demonstrate a sales increase; we have not tested the feature on a store.
Who can use Pulse and how it works
Shopify’s documentation says Pulse is available only to some stores with recent sales activity. The user must be the store owner or a staff member with admin access; Shopify Network Intelligence must also be activated. The announcement date should not be interpreted as availability for everyone. The sources we read do not provide a complete list of countries, languages or a general rollout deadline specifically for web search.
The admin home page can show up to five suggested actions at once. Selecting an action opens a Sidekick conversation and a to-do list. The documentation explicitly says that the assistant does not change the live store without your approval; you can review changes before they are applied.
What a store owner should check
Our editorial recommendation is to treat each suggestion as a hypothesis rather than a finished business decision:
- Check whether Pulse cards appear on your admin home page. A missing card does not by itself indicate a technical fault.
- Before approving anything, distinguish facts about your own store from external assumptions. If a suggestion relies on market claims, check their date and relevance to your audience.
- Review the proposed to-do list and specific changes. Do not change prices, assortment or delivery terms simply because the assistant suggested it.
- Decide in advance what you will measure for a chosen change and over what period. Do not attribute an outcome to web search without considering other possible causes.
This is an editorial review workflow, not a test result reported by Shopify. Do not activate additional data-processing settings solely to obtain a card without understanding their terms.
An important limit: simulation is not sales
The Pulse documentation separately describes recommendations marked “Tested by Sidekick”: some theme changes are evaluated in simulated shopping sessions through SimGym. This mode is in early access for certain stores and does not cover every recommendation. It should not be confused with the web-search announcement or treated as evidence of an increase in real orders.
Bottom line: owners whose stores already have Pulse can review the new suggestions while retaining human approval and their own assessment of evidence. Web context may help frame a better question; it does not replace checking the conditions of your business.
