On October 28, 2026, Shopify announced Flow workflow management through AI Toolkit. An external AI agent can create, change and delete workflows, and activate or deactivate them in the user’s own store.
Who benefits
Online-store owners who maintain automated operations with a contractor. The practical change: an agent can prepare a workflow, while the team should control activation separately.
A saved draft still needs review
The creation operation reference explains that it saves a draft that may contain validation errors, such as a missing action or incomplete field. These need fixing before activation. This reference belongs to the unstable API version; do not treat it as a guarantee that the integration will remain unchanged.
Our editorial recommendation for a first attempt:
- Describe one operation, its trigger and expected result without customer personal data.
- First ask for an explanation of proposed changes and a draft, without activation or deletion of existing workflows.
- With the responsible person, review conditions, actions and errors. Decide beforehand how to stop the workflow if results are wrong.
- Approve activation timing and result checks separately. Do not let the agent expand its assignment independently.
This is a recommended working process, not a built-in guarantee of approval for every action.
Access and limits
AI Toolkit works with a supported AI tool and a store context authenticated through Shopify CLI. Having the toolkit does not establish permission for a particular operation. The release is for managing the store’s own workflows; direct use of these APIs by third-party apps is restricted. Direct API access requires the write_automations scope approved by Shopify.
According to Flow help, the app is available on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus, but some actions and limits depend on the plan; staff need appropriate permissions. This does not establish that every agent capability is automatically available to every store.
The takeaway: separate preparation, review and activation. We have not run the toolkit in a store, tested permissions or measured time savings.
