On October 28, 2026, GitHub opened public preview of image generation and editing in Copilot. It is available in VS Code, the GitHub Copilot app and Copilot CLI for Pro, Pro+, Business and Enterprise plans.
Who benefits
Small-business owners whose employee or contractor already builds a website in this environment. An illustrative use is a draft decorative banner for a service page. This is an editorial example, not a measured time-saving case study.
Two checks before work starts
According to the announcement, generation is billed separately from the chat model through image tokens that consume the plan’s AI credits. A visible “Made with AI” watermark is optional and off by default.
Our recommendation: agree a budget and a method for labeling AI illustrations before assigning the task. Do not treat the absence of a watermark as proof that an image is a photograph. For actual hotel rooms, dishes or products, use images that accurately represent the offer.
Availability and control
Organization and enterprise owners can disable the generation model. GitHub’s policy documentation explains that access depends on organization or enterprise settings, not just a plan name. Ask the responsible person to check the account your contributor actually uses.
Before publishing a banner, separately check its wording, rights to input material and whether the image accurately represents the service. Agree who approves the final file.
The takeaway: assess the new tool alongside spending and content-review rules. We have not confirmed an exact per-image price or tested generation, quality or credit charges. This is preview, not announced general availability.
