Etsy updates AI rules: sellers should check photos and instructions

Etsy requires a real unedited photo for most products and prohibits AI-generated functional instructions. What small sellers should review.

On October 22, 2026, Etsy announced updated requirements for AI use. Existing listings are affected: sellers must update those that do not meet the rules. A small shop’s next step is to review photographs and instructional digital products, rather than automatically remove every AI-assisted creation.

Check the product photographs

According to Etsy’s announcement, most products need at least one unedited photograph of the actual item against a real background. Other images may be edited, including with AI, if they represent the product accurately. Concealing defects or changing its true appearance is prohibited.

The image policy sets out important exceptions. Original designs printed on standard products by a production partner may use stock mockups with the photo owner’s permission. Nonvisual digital files may use representative imagery; other digital downloads should show a preview or excerpt of their content. For customised items sellers make themselves, photographs should show their own real, completed work.

Etsy’s advice to make the first photograph as realistic as possible is not a separate requirement to place the mandatory unedited photograph first.

Which instructions can no longer be sold

The AI-content policy prohibits AI-generated functional instructions: craft patterns, recipes, project plans and guides for completing a specific task. A seller’s own instructions must remain their own work. A pattern or recipe listing must also include a real unedited photograph of the resulting product.

Meanwhile, Etsy’s help page allows AI creations based on sellers’ original prompts, with appropriate human creative involvement and disclosure of AI use in the description. This is not a blanket ban on AI art.

A practical review for shop owners

Nadali’s recommendations:

  1. List active listings with AI imagery and, separately, instructional products.
  2. Identify each product type and any applicable exception before replacing its entire gallery.
  3. For physical products, compare colour, texture and defects with the actual item. Keep the original photograph.
  4. For your own pattern, show an item genuinely made from it. Do not use generation as evidence that the instructions work.

Verification limits

In its official announcement, Etsy describes further rollout of enforcement tools. Initial reports through the new misleading-AI-imagery category do not mean immediate automatic enforcement. We found no separate future effective date for these platform rules and did not test the availability of guidance in a particular account.

Bottom line: start with accurate product representation and authorship of instructions. After changing a gallery, also review its image alt text.
