Claude adds temporary API conversations: check retention and recovery

Claude API message threads are in beta. Owners of custom automation should review conversation recovery and data handling before enabling the feature.

What changed

On November 2, Anthropic announced message threads in beta for the Messages API. After the initial request, an integration can send only new messages while the server temporarily holds the earlier conversation. The company claims smaller requests and a faster start to responses; Nadali has not measured speed.

Who benefits: business owners whose team or contractor maintains custom automation using the Claude API. This is not new memory for ordinary Claude chat or a requirement to move every workflow to it.

A temporary conversation is not a business record

The documentation says a thread expires five minutes after its last request; the feature description says its server-side copy is deleted no later than one hour after its last use. The general policy separately allows retention for legal requirements or safety checks, so the one-hour period does not mean every possible record is deleted. The application must retain its own conversation copy for recovery. Those are different periods, not a promise of one-hour availability.

The feature does not change pricing or rate limits and does not enable prompt caching itself. It should not be presented as a guaranteed bill reduction.

What to ask the person responsible

Nadali’s editorial checking sequence:

  1. Establish whether the workflow uses this specific beta feature and who approves integration changes.
  2. Using a non-sensitive example, test continuation after a pause and an application restart. Ask to see the recovered content, not merely a successful technical status.
  3. Agree where the application’s copy is stored, who can access it and when it is deleted. Do not create an indefinite customer-data archive merely to gain speed.
  4. If the workflow performs actions, separately verify that conversation recovery does not repeat a completed order or message. This is an editorial recommendation, not a claim of a discovered defect.

Availability and limits

The beta is available through the Claude API, Claude Platform on AWS, Anthropic-managed Claude Models on Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry. Do not automatically extend that list to other services offering Claude.

Anthropic’s data-handling table and the feature page mark message threads as ineligible for zero data retention (ZDR) and the HIPAA readiness arrangement for protected health information in the US. An applicable arrangement for other features does not establish this one’s eligibility. Sensitive workflows require a separate review of requirements and the contract.

Sources were read on November 3, 2026; no API, account or customer workflow was tested. The takeaway: approve a speed optimization together with checks of recovery and data handling.
