Gemini Skills: rollout schedule and access checks for small businesses

Google scheduled the Gemini Skills rollout from October 13. Check account access, the Gems transition and your team's instructions before changing workflows.

Google’s schedule, announced on September 30, puts October 13, 2026 at the start of the gradual Skills rollout in the Gemini app, with completion expected by mid-November. This is the announced starting date, not confirmation that every account already has the feature.

What changes

Skills are reusable AI instructions that can be applied in conversations and combined for one task. For a small team, this is a reason to organize response requirements: which facts may be used, what tone to follow, and what a person must check before sending.

Illustrative scenario: a hotel drafts answers to recurring guest questions. One instruction defines the tone; another defines the response structure. Booking conditions come from an approved document, and a staff member reviews the finished draft. This is a possible application, not a verified hotel case or a promise of time savings.

Check access first

Google’s sources differ on an important point. The announcement describes a rollout for personal accounts and Workspace customers, while the current Gemini user help requires a personal Google Account and an age of at least 18; it currently excludes work and school accounts.

We have not confirmed availability in a particular account. Before changing a workflow, check whether your team can see Skills in its approved work environment. A personal account should not become a workaround for company rules on customer data.

What to do with existing Gems

Google’s plan removes Gems support for business and enterprise no sooner than March 1, 2027. Skills in Gemini and Workspace currently do not synchronize automatically. Moving instructions in one environment should not be treated as an update to the other.

To prepare, we suggest a short working inventory:

  • Which recurring task does this instruction address?
  • Who keeps it up to date?
  • Which sources and limits must be preserved?
  • Which examples will test the output after migration?

Start with one task that contains no confidential data. Compare a few answers before and after migration, and keep the previous working method available until the new one passes review.

Before the test, name an owner for the instruction. That person should check the facts in the examples and confirm that the new method is suitable for the team.
